Brian Wallace, the Executive Director of MGM, is from South Arica but has spent most of his years serving in other countries. With a trip back to South Africa a few years back, God seemed to plant a desire to address the heart breaking condition of AIDS in S. Africa. As he has stated many times, "AIDS is producing thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of families, where children are the head of household". Death and struggle are at a level that no one in the United States can begin to comprehend. And, as a native of S. Africa, Brian believes God is calling him to again come back to help his own people.
Brian shared this vision with Norm Curington shortly after his trip. Norm has always had a strong interest in Africa, but specifically on a visit to S. Africa, he too sensed that perhaps this was an area of opportunity he could be involved. Since then, he and Brian have been looking at opportunities and possisbilities to establish a "beach front" in S. Africa to begin ministry in Southern Africa.
Brad takes a different course but ends up on the same page. Brad and his wife Monica left Haiti to pursue a master's degree in Epidemiology from John Hopkin's University, more specifically focusing on AIDS in third world countries. Without a discussion with Brian or Norm, Brad and Monica began to also feel that God may be calling them to consider getting involved in clinical ministry in, of all places, South Africa! When he and the others started sharing their dreams of the future of MGM, it was an amazing confirmation that everyone had the same vision, but coming from different perspectives.
What this ultimately means is too premature to define. Next steps include a couple of planned trips to S. Africa to scout out existing efforts and ministries. And, continue to seek God's guidance. Any missionary will tell you that you can't rush missions. And, this is no less true for us as we look at S. Africa and Southern Africa. We are praying that God is clearly calling us to help; He will show us how to help, and He will show us when and where to help.
If God has perhaps planted similar desires in your heart, perhaps you can join this path with us.
